The course will focus on the ever-changing nature of business and how it is affected by National and International issues. Students are required, for both AS and A2, to keep up to date with current affairs as part of the course. At AS Level, students will study two modules. The first module will provide candidates with an introduction to the scope of Business Studies within the context of starting a new business, and will be expected to have an understanding of the range of activities involved in setting up a small business. In the second module students will examine how to measure the effectiveness of larger businesses, including the study of Marketing, Finance, Operations Management and Human Resources. If you choose to continue to A2 level, then the areas of study remains the same, but you will go into more depth and detail, building on AS knowledge. There is more focus of analysis and evaluation and your ability to show a higher level of knowledge and understanding. You will take more responsibility for your own learning at this level, reading up around the subjects and keeping your current affairs knowledge up to date. There is no coursework, however, you will have to complete essays and reports at A2 level. In addition to formal teaching, students will also take part in role plays, class discussions, group / individual presentations and participate in industrial visits.
How you will gain the qualification
AS/A level Business Studies is an examination based modular two-year course. At AS level there are two exams at the end of the year which include short-answer questions and multi-part data response questions. These papers form the AS level qualification. At the end of the A2 level, there are two exams one of which will be based on an unseen case study, while the other will include pre-release research tasks and essay style questions.
What qualifications you need
Previous study of Business Studies is not required. However, a minimum of six GCSEs at grade C is required, including English Language and Mathematics (Higher Level), which are compulsory requirements. Students wishing to study A-levels full-time at Coleg Cambria must have 6 GCSE Grade Cs or better including one of English, English Language, Agored English Level 2. Students who achieve 6 Grade Cs or better will be able to confirm their enrolment through our normal processes.
Where to next
Students may pursue their careers in a variety of ways, such as reading for degrees in Business related fields including Accountancy, Business Management and Economics. In non-related fields, the study of a Business Studies A level is always regarded as an asset within areas such as Sciences, the Arts, Leisure/Tourism Management and Catering. It is also possible to enter some professions directly following A levels and Business Studies is much sought after in banking, marketing and retailing.
