Course content

The course consists of the study of theatre, music, dance, art and a series of performances throughout the year. The course is potentially a full-time two year course (depending on students successfully completing year one). Year One works towards the ASDAN Certificate in Personal and Social Development which is run at Entry Level 1 and Year Two works towards the EDI Entry Level Certificate in Skills for Working Life with vocational units of ‘Introduction to Performing Arts’ and ‘Starting to Develop Performance Skills’ at Entry 2 Level and ASDAN Award in Personal and Social Development at Entry 2. The development of english, maths and ICT skills will be an integral aspect of the course leading to a functional skills qualification at an appropriate level in each subject.

Teaching and assessment

Students are taught by teachers who are subject specialists and experienced in the area of learning disabilities. Assessment is by Q&A, Observation, group work and the collation of material for a portfolio of work. The course team will review students’ progress formally three times a year in relation to the course aims and their individual development targets.

Entry requirements

Applicants must show:
  • A desire to be involved in Performing Arts
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • An ability to express constructive ideas to the group
  • An ability to access the college facilities independently
  • An ability to address their own personal needs
  • They are able to fully participate in all aspects of the course

Moving On Plan (139A assessment) or similar evidence and a report from your most recent education establishment

Students are expected to participate in all performances both on and off-site, these occasionally take place in the evenings. Students will normally be expected to make their own travel arrangements to and from performances which fall outside of college hours.

Additional course costs

Students will be expected to pay for:

  • black uniform and suitable footwear
  • Contributions towards educational trips and performances at venues outside college

Progression

Students can progress from Year 1 ‘Living Independently’ to Year 2 ‘Supported Employment’. Students will develop the confidence and skills to participate in the community or undertake social employment. Some may be able to progress onto an appropriate supported employment.
