The IAB is the longest established professional body for Book-keeping. It was formed in 1973, and is committed to maintaining the highest standards in Book-keeping. It holds its examinations in over 90 countries throughout the world.
This qualification takes what you have learnt at Level 1 and develops it into a full understanding of double entry book-keeping. The course is suited to those who are already working in a finance office and who want to capitalise on their experience.
Candidates will gain an in-depth knowledge of business routines and how all types of cash and credit transactions are recorded in manual accounts.

You will learn how to complete a basic VAT return and how to complete accounts to trial balance.
Course content
- The principles of VAT. Includes registration and the VAT schemes.
- Maintaining petty cash records. Includes petty cash vouchers, the petty cash book and maintaining the petty cash balance.
- Maintaining and reconciling the cashbook. Includes the analysed cashbook and reconciling the cashbook to the bank statement.
- Preparing and recording financial documents. Includes preparing invoices and credit notes, understanding the double entry system, discounts, using the journal and control accounts.
- Maintaining the journal. Using the journal for error correction, bad debts and processing wages costs.
Teaching and assessment
This is a 17 week intensive course. To be successful you must be prepared to do some independent study.
This course has 7 units with a total credit value of 12.
There is a 2.5 hour exam.
Entry requirements
This course has an open access entry but a knowledge of maths and English is required.
Additional course costs
IAB Registration fee £80.00. This fee covers the costs of:
- Examinations, assignments and knowledge tests
- Full membership of the IAB for 12 months.
Recommended textbook: IAB Level 2 Award in Book-keeping (approximately £30.00 each inclusive of P&P).
Progression
AAT L2 Certificate in Accounting. (Exemptions available - ask for details).
Dates and times
This course begins in September and February each year and runs on Wednesday* evenings from 6:00pm to 9.30pm. (*subject to change)
