General information

The motor vehicle advanced apprenticeship is available for learners aged from 16-65 who are employed in the retail motor industry and who have previously completed the level 2 apprenticeship. College attendance is on a day-release basis and assessment will take place in the workplace. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through workshop sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching.

General information

The motor vehicle advanced apprenticeship is available for learners aged from 16-65 who are employed in the retail motor industry and who have previously completed the level 2 apprenticeship. College attendance is on a day-release basis and assessment will take place in the workplace. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through workshop sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching.

This course is nationally recognised and provides stepping stones to further qualifications which link practical skills and theoretical knowledge. The course is modular and not meant to be related to a time scale, the Level 3 Certificate is awarded when the required number of competencies have been obtained.

Course content

In-house training will take place one day a week and regular assessments and reviews will occur in the workplace. Learners will work towards an VCQ level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, a level 3 technical certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, key skills level 2 in Application of Number, Communication and IT, health and safety and Employer's Rights and Responsibilities. The Standards for the competencies have been set by the Lead Body for the Motor Industry - Automotive Skills Council. The qualification is awarded by the Institue of the Motor Industry.

The course is structured through a series of units. Some of the learning will be done in the form of 'learning packages' i.e. information sheets and lists of text book references for self-study, so that the subject can be studied at any time in any order.

Teaching and assessment

Evidence must be provided of ability to successfully perform a series of practical tasks throughout the course. The evidence can be collected at work, or by way of the realistic working environment at college. The teaching strategies suit a wide range of learning styles - they include ILT (Information learning technology), classroom based delivery, practical tasks, simulated I.L.T. and workshop tasks.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Must be employed in the retail motor industry for a minimum of 30 hours a week and be able to attend college one day a week.

Compulsory attendance at a college interview day with assessment in English, maths and technical skills.

Progression

The successful completion of level 3, can be followed by a Higher qualification such as an BTEC HNC/D. Having achieved the level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, students will be classified as fully-skilled automotive technicians.
