Who is the course for?

Level 3 NVQ Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) provides for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3. This means that the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

Who is the course for?

Level 3 NVQ Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) provides for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3. This means that the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

What will I study?

The course is divided into two mandatory units:

  • BSL311 – Understand varied British Sign Language in a range of work situations*
  • BSL312 – Use varied British Sign Language in a range of work situations*

*The unit titles refer to ‘work situations’ however the content and assessment criteria allow for evidence from a wide range of contexts.

To achieve the full Level 3 NVQ Certificate in British Sign Language, candidates are required to achieve both units.

The course is taught in 2 parts:

  • Part 1 Language Development, where BSL grammar, structure and vocabulary are improved and expanded to meet the Level 3 criteria. The topics used within language development will be discussed within your group and in agreement with the assessor.
  • Part 2 Portfolio-Building, when ready to do so, the candidate will begin to collect evidence after discussion and in agreement with the assessor. A variety of methods to collect evidence will be discussed with the assessor.
How will the course be delivered?

Through classroom based activities alongside a Deaf, BSL qualified tutor and other delegates at a similar level. Candidates will take part in a variety of activities such as games, research, discussion, group work or quizzes.

Within part 1 of this programme you will develop fluency and confidence in BSL, up to Level 3 standard. Part 2 requires the candidate to build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating BSL skills. This will be used to show how you meet NVQ Level 3 standards.

Course Entry Criteria

It is essential to have completed or are awaiting results for the Signature or CACDP Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) prior to attending this course. The selection process will be via interview with the course tutor.

The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:

  • More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
  • 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
  • 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
  • 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
  • Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost

All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.

What will I get at the end of the course?

Successful completion of this qualification can be used as evidence of the language skills needed in order to be able to operate independently and at an advanced level in the target language.

What can I do next?

On completion of this qualification, the candidate may wish to progress to Signature Level 6.

How much does it cost?

The course is priced at £1,500.00 per delegate (prices are subject to change) and this includes tuition, paperwork and certificate.
