What will I study?

For self care to be a successful strategy it needs to be promoted by healthcare professionals, who also need to offer support to individuals. Healthcare professional must work to create an environment for self care, which starts with recognising the importance of self care activities at all stages of the care planning process. Healthcare professionals can also provide support and resources to assist individuals in managing these activities.

Example include: Patient education, self care skills training, health and social care information, care plan approach, self diagnostic tools, self monitoring devices, peer support networks and home adaptations.

The module looks at the four elements of supporting self care: Skills, Tools, Advice and Networks (STAN)

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Have a broad knowledge of what self care is
  • Be aware of ways in which healthcare professionals can offer guidance and support to individuals
  • Have a basic knowledge of the seven ‘Common Core Principles to Support Self Care’
  • Be able to offer examples of how each of the STAN elements can support self care activities
How will the course be delivered?

It is estimated that this module will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete (depending on learning speed). As an e-learning module you can complete this training in convenient stages and revisit whenever you wish. The system will record your progress throughout.

Course Entry Criteria

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:

  • More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
  • 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
  • 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
  • 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
  • Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost

All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.

What will I get at the end of the course?

On completion of this course you will be able to download a Virtual College certificate.
