This ILM Level 5 Unit is designed for middle managers, helping them to develop their skills and experience and prepare for senior management responsibilities.

By undertaking this unit, students will better understand the following:

1. Specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling an organisation to achieve its goals

  • The nature and purpose of organisations, including mission and value statements
  • Stakeholders and their objectives
  • Organisation charts, including hierarchical and matrix structures; indication of the range of operational functions
  • Levels of management and associated roles and responsibilities within organisation
  • Profile and job functions of middle managers
  • Formal and informal organisational relationships
  • The management task, including planning, organising, motivating and controlling
  • Range of management styles
  • Differences between management and leadership
  • The importance of organisational goals and objectives
  • Organisational objectives as specific and measurable steps towards achieving a larger goal
  • Aligning middle management responsibilities to organisational goals and objectives

2. How communication and interpersonal skills affect managerial performance in the workplace

  • Human Behaviour
  • How cultural and individual differences, verbal (esp. questioning and active listening skills) and non-verbal communication interact to affect understanding, and their effect on communication in the workplace

How will the course be delivered?

Classroom based sessions alongside other members of the group.

Course Entry Requirements

Candidates would normally have completed the ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership & Management and/or be employed in a managerial role. An informal discussion with the Programme Leader is recommended to ensure that the qualification meets individual needs.

The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:

  • More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
  • 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
  • 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
  • 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
  • Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost

All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.
