Diploma for the Children & Young People’s Workforce
This is a part time course for adults who are employed in a children and young person’s setting. You will demonstrate how you meet a set of National Occupational Standards for the role of a child care worker and show that you have the level of skills and knowledge to complete your work effectively.

Aim and purpose of the qualification
This qualification confirms competence in these areas where appropriate and serves as the required qualification (for all new practitioners) for registration and regulatory requirements in the sector.
What will I study?You will complete 11 mandatory units and various optional units from a wide choice. The Level 3 Diploma is made up of 65 credits and some of the topics you will cover are:
- Safeguarding and well being
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
- Promoting Communication
- Principles of duty of care
- Health & safety
- Child and young person development
- Working together for the benefit of children and young people
You must be employed in an appropriate child care setting. For the social care pathway this may include foster care, respite, community based or domiciliary care and residential care.
DurationYou will be on programme for eighteen months. During this time you will be expected to attend an Induction session and weekly 3 hour taught sessions.
AssessmentYou will be assessed by an approved assessor, who will visit you in your workplace to observe and assess your practical work. You will submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and complete assignments and activities.
Qualification achievedLevel 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
Apprenticeship route
You will remain in your usual workplace and attend college one day a week. In addition to the level 3 diploma you will already have, or gain, a numeracy and literacy qualification. You would need to pass a test to be accepted onto this route.
Where next?You may progress on to a Foundation Degree or a level 5 qualification in Leadership.
