What will I study?The modules focus on a range of key management areas, which together provide the essential tools to enable students to become effective managers. The participative and engaging class-based sessions provide a blend of theory and practical application, and allow students to develop knowledge and skills that can be directly applied to their work. The qualification incorporates the following:
Award – Our Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership lets you strengthen and develop your knowledge of middle management by focusing on specific management areas that are applicable to your job. To achieve the Award, you must complete one module.
Certificate – A more extensive qualification giving a broader knowledge of middle management skills while focusing on the specific leadership areas appropriate to you and your workplace. To achieve the Certificate you must achieve at least 2 modules, to a minimum credit value of 13 (see below for credit information).
Diploma – With a more comprehensive structure, the Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership gives you all the key skills and competencies you’ll need to become an effective middle manager. A Diploma in Management and Leadership is the benchmark qualification for full CMI membership, taking you another step towards Chartered Manager status. The Diploma consists of all 9 modules stated below.

SEMESTER 1:
Personal Development as a Manager/Leader: (6
Credits):
10 weeks x 1 hour (Afternoon)
This unit is
about improving individual management and leadership skills and
competencies against objectives:
- Assess and plan for personal professional development
- Plan for resources required and implement and evaluate the
personal development plan to promote and support staff
welfare
Being a Leader: (7 Credits):
10 weeks x 2 hours (Afternoon)
This unit concentrates on leadership skills and the
understanding of ethical and cultural issues within the
organisation:
- Understand the organisation’s ethical and value-based approach to leadership
- Understand leadership styles
- Secure achievement of team involvement and objectives
through leadership
Information Based Decision Making: (7 Credits):
10 weeks x 1.5 hours (Evening)
This unit is about the communication and use of information to
support decision making:
- Identify and select sources of data and information
- Analyse and present information to support decision making
- Communicate the results of information analysis and decisions
SEMESTER 2:
Meeting Stakeholder & Quality Needs: (6 Credits):
5 weeks x 3 hours (Afternoon)
This unit concentrates on the methods needed to meet stakeholder
requirements to agreed quality standards and seeking
improvement:
- Identify stakeholders and their requirements
- Apply and improve quality standards
- Promote continuous improvement and change
Resource Management: (7 Credits):
5 weeks x 3 hours (Afternoon)
Identify, plan, use and evaluate recourses to meet
objectives:
- Identify and plan resources needed to meet objectives
- Select and use the resource supply chain to meet planned objectives
- Monitor and evaluate internal and external resource use to meet plans
Project Development & Control: (6 Credits):
10 weeks x 1.5 hours (Evening)
This unit is about understanding projects, developing project
plans and management strategies and ensuring projects achieve
objectives with targets:
- Identify components of project stages and lifecycle
- Describe project methodologies and their application
- Develop a project plan, identify and mitigate risks and construct a monitor and review strategy
SEMESTER 3:
Managing Recruitment & Selection: (7 Credits):
5 weeks x 3 hours (Afternoon)
This unit is about identifying a need for staff, selecting
objectively and inducting effectively within legal and
organisational requirements:
- Impact of law and organisational procedures on the process of recruitment and selection
- Organise and conduct a selection process, justify a decision and keep necessary records
- Communicate the selection decisions and plan induction for the appointed candidate
- Identify personnel requirements and present a reasoned case for changes in staffing resources
Managing The Change Process (7 Credits):
5 weeks x 3 hours (Afternoon)
This unit is about identifying opportunities for change,
modelling the change process and managing the change to produce
expected outcomes.
- Understand the forces of change in an organisation
- Understanding the impact of change and its processes
- Management of change, Monitoring, Planning & Evaluation
Conducting a Management Report: (10 Credits):
10 weeks x 1.5 hours (Evening)
Identify research and produce a work-related project and
evaluate its impact:
- Identify and justify a management project
- Conduct research using sources and analyse data and options
- Make conclusions and recommendations to achieve the project aim
- Show and review the results of the project
Assessment methods can include case studies, role-play, assignments, reports, integrated work activities, projects and presentations. The course leaders will confirm each module and its specific assessment method at induction. Successful completion of the modules will require the student to undertake additional study outside of the taught hours and to complete tasks and assignments to fulfil the assessment requirements of the CMI.
How will the course be delivered?The most consistent way to complete this course would be to book onto the full Diploma; this will allow you the opportunity to complete the full 9 units detailed above, within the academic year.
Alternatively you may wish to undertake the qualification on a modular basis, meaning that you could complete within two academic years of commencement. Contact us for more information on this mode of delivery.
Course Entry RequirementsThere are no formal entry criteria. All potential candidates will be invited to an informal interview to confirm that the course meets your specific development needs. If it doesn’t, we have other courses that will.
The college operates a no refunds policy as detailed below. Cancellations and transfer requests are subject to the following conditions:
- More than 4 weeks notice – no charge
- 4 weeks notice – 30% of the cost
- 2-3 weeks notice – 50% of the cost
- 1-2 weeks notice – 75% of the cost
- Less than 1 weeks notice – 100% of the cost
All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a £10 administration charge. The full fee’s policy is available on request.
