Course Level: Foundation Degree Course Duration: 2 Years FT / 3 Years PT Entry Requirements

160 points are required in total, which equate to one of the following:

  • 2 full A-levels at grade C or above, or equivalent combination of two grades
  • MPP profile at Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma
  • M at Level 3 City and Guilds Extended Diploma
  • MM at Level 3 BTEC Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • In addition you will need supporting GCSE’s at grade C or above in Maths and English, or Level 2 equivalents

Students over the age of 21 and with relevant vocational experience or transferable knowledge and skills may be assessed on merit.

Programme Aims

The programme provides a deepened understanding towards a variety of approaches to Outdoor Adventure education, recreation and leisure. The modules of study challenge current approaches and facilitation methods, promoting the experimentation of new methodologies. This programme develops a holistic outdoor adventure view, not just those relating to technical and safety issues. It develops values relating to the provision and practices of outdoor adventure, complementing National Governing Body Awards.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year, full time programme with the option to study on a part-time basis. In addition to the Foundation Degree programme there are opportunities to gain experience and work towards nationally recognised specialist qualifications in outdoor activities. It is designed to be both physically and mentally stimulating with learning being undertaken through a combination of lectures, seminars, visits, individual assignments, skills instruction and work-based learning.

Please note: a CRB check will be necessary to carry out work experience and for future employment.

Opportunities to gain experience in a variety of adventurous activities will be offered. These may include paddle sports, rock climbing, mountain craft, sailing and power boating. Assessments wll be offered where students meet National Governing Body pre-requisites. In addition, there will be opportunity for you to work practically with a number of client groups.

Assessment

Your progress wll be monitored by a variety of assessment techniques including a planned programme of written assignments, presentations, group work, practical assessments and in-class tests. An independent research project and 20 working days of independently arranged work experience must be completed as part of this programme. Assessments will be offered where students meet National Governing Body pre-requisites.

Progression

Successful students may progress onto the final year of the BA (Hons) Education Studies course at Plymouth University. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability.
