This course provides an ideal introduction for anyone with an interest in exploring the move towards sustainable development and renewable energy. Students will gain an understanding of UK and European policy designed to promote sustainability and an overview of the renewables industry. They will also explore selected renewables in more detail to compare with conventional energy sources in domestic and business use.

Entry Requirements

It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved 4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science or equivalent. Learners must also have an interest in sustainable energy.

What You Will Study

This course consists of three broad range topics to include:

Understand influences on the promotion of sustainable development: Students will identify current laws and groups in the UK and Europe promoting sustainable development and examine their own lifestyle and behaviour and suggest ways to reduce their eco-footprint. Understand the role played by wind and biomass renewable energy: Students will identify and describe the extent of current power generation from biomass and wind power in the UK and Europe and its future potential.

Understand comparative costs of energy production and distribution: Students will compare and contrast the costs of wind and biomass renewable energy with oil and gas sources. This will enable comparison of the environmental benefits of renewable energy as well as the economic costs for domestic and commercial energy users.

Functional Skills

You will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.
