Course Duration: 1 year Days at College 1 or 2 days (Award or Certificate) Course DescriptionSuccessful completion of the Certificate along with appropriate functional skills will enable students who have not previously achieved the necessary GCSEs entry onto the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DVN) Programme. The Award and Certificate also allows the development of fundamental knowledge for those who wish to work as reception or lay staff within a practice.

The Award and Certificate also allows the development of fundamental knowledge for those who wish to work as reception or lay staff within a practice.
Entry RequirementsEntrance to the course is by interview and there are no formal qualification requirements, although all students enrolled on the course must be at least 16 years of age. In addition, your Initial Assessment results should show that you are working at Level 1. Previous qualifications and experience will be taken into consideration.
This course is suitable if you are:
- A school leaver (at least 16 years of age) with insufficient GCSEs to register as a DVN programme
- A school leaver with sufficient GCSE requirements, but not yet ready to undertake the DVN course
- A school leaver unsure of your chosen career but keen to work in an animal-related industry
- Changing your career
- Employed within a veterinary practice
- Seeking understanding of veterinary work without necessarily completing the full qualification, for example reception and lay staff. A choice of individual modules can be studied.
- Principles of basic animal nursing assistance
- Companion animal anatomy and physiology
- Infection control for animal nursing assistants
- Delivery of basic treatments to animals
- Maintenance of animal accommodation
- Provision of feed and water to animals
- Principles of companion animal pharmacy
- Companion animal parasitology and zoonosis
- Companion animal nutrition
- Companion animal anaesthesia and fluid therapy
Plus:
- Portfolio completion support included as part of the course with emphasis during the final two weeks of the programme
Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised functional
qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.
