This programme combines theoretical study in college with practical experience. It aims to prepare you to work competently, safely and effectively with children and their families in a wide range of settings.

The diploma course aims to prepare people to work with children
and their families in a wide range of settings with different
professional settings. There are nine mandatory units:
- an introduction to working with children
- development from conception to 16 s
- supporting children
- keeping children safe
- the principles underpinning the role of the practitioner
- promoting a healthy environment for children
- play, learning and education
- caring for children
- development of practical skills (practical unit)
There are also three optional units.
Assessment is through written assignments, internally marked and
externally moderated and evidence of practice. There is an
externally marked exam at the end of the course.
The course runs over two years, full time and you will be expected
to achieve a minimum 80% attendance.
You will gain knowledge through observational studies, practical
work with children and lectures and discussions with those
concerned in both theoretical and practical training.
In college you will explore a broad range of topics related to
children. There will also be an opportunity to gain qualifications
in first-aid and key skills.
You will need five GCSEs at grade C or above to include English
and maths.
If you are wishing to go into teacher training or pursue a medical
career, you will also need a GCSE in science/distinction in a
relevant full level two course, excellent references from school, a
clear CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check and health check.
Students may wish to progress to the Foundation Degree in Early Years or take specialist courses such as teacher training. You will need to fulfil the criteria for entry for further study.
A total of 50% of the course is spent in a range of supervised work placements. There will also be an opportunity to achieve a basic first aid qualification and key skills.
