(BSL) was recognised by the Government as a language in its own right in March 2003. BSL is the first or preferred language of an estimated 70,000 deaf people in the UK. BSL is a visual-gestural language, with its own grammar and principles, which are completely different from the grammatical structure of English.
What are the entry requirements?
This requirement is compulsory and a pass at Unit 101 Introduction OR Unit 101F Frontline Staff
gained at Brent Start or elsewhere.
What will I study?

BSL102 Conversational BSL & BSL 103 Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life Course
content:
BSL competence standards include requirements for candidates to have sufficient sight, manual
dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL. You will need to satisfy these
requirements before being accepted onto this qualification.
This qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Learners
who are new to BSL should cover 101 first, as units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge. To
achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, candidates must pass all units.
There is an alternative BSL101 units available for frontline staff, and contain language more applicable to these specific learners. These can be studied on their own. Successful candidates can go on to complete units BSL102 and BSL103 to achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.
How is the course taught?
By practising the skills and knowledge to enable you to communicate with deaf people in British
Sign Language about familiar, day-to-day topics and activities such as meeting people, exchanging

If you are:
- aged 16-18 years old on an accredited course
- on Job Seeker's Allowance or on Employment Support Allowance (Work-Related Activity Group)
- unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit (or are dependent of someone who is unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit) and sign a Declaration of Intention to enter employment
- aged 19-23 studying for a first full Level 2 qualification and do not already have a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent
- aged 19-24 studying for a first full Level 3 qualification and you do not already have a full Level 3 qualification or equivalent
- studying GCSE English or maths and do not already have a grade C or above
- studying an accredited English or maths course
- studying an entry or Level 1 accredited course and are aged 19-23 and have prior attainment below full Level 2. (This does not apply to ESOL courses)
- taking part in a Family Learning activity
