What is the course about?Students will work on a garment of their choice and will compile
a portfolio of samples and handouts for reference.
The content and outcomes of the course will be discussed with you
and may be adapted to meet your needs and those of the group. By
the end of the course you should be able to:
Choose patterns and materials
Follow pattern instructions
Fit clothes properly
Be familiar with specialised terminology
Have an awareness of what makes a home-made garment successful
Be competent with a sewing machine
Have a knowledge of hand sewing stitches
Have completed all the processes to make a simple garment

Who is the course for?
To provide a basic introduction to dressmaking covering; pattern
and material selection, hand sewing stitches and sewing machine
skills.
Who is the course for and what level is it?
This course is designed for those looking to develop their
creativity alongside others in the community. It is for beginners
with no previous knowledge of dressmaking and for those who have
some knowledge of dressmaking and would like to refresh their
skills.
What is your approach?
Students will be given advice on how to take measurements so
they can select appropriate patterns and fabric for their chosen
garment.
They will work on their garments at their own pace with individual
tuition as required.
Regular demonstration of processes and techniques accompanied by
handouts. Students will be encouraged to make their own samples to
build up a learning file for reference
Students will have the opportunities to discuss their work and
share dressmaking problems and successes
Students will have access to current dressmaking magazines and
patterns

What will I need?
You will have an opportunity to maintain an Individual Learning
Plan and your tutor will discuss your progress and achievement with
you throughout the course.
What will I need for the first session?
A notebook and pen, also any scrap material you may have at home.
Advice will be given on equipment and how to choose patterns and
materials.
