How long is the course?

1 - 2 years.

What will I study?

A study of photographic practices in the wider context of art and design will be explored, including style, genre and art traditions.

The history of photography will provide an insight into the creative, technical and cultural impact of photography on society.

You will have the opportunity to use a variety of photographic equipment such as large format cameras and studio lighting. You will be expected to experiment with digital and traditional (darkroom) image processing techniques during your time on the course.

What else can I do?

The A Level in Photography combines well with Art and Design, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies and Media.

What does the course lead to?

You can expect to gain employment in photo-imaging, the press and publishing, advertising and fashion, film and media industries.

What can I go on to study?

You could choose to continue your study of photography, or a related subject, at degree level. Alternatively, you may want to consider the HND in Interactive Media or the Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design 18+, both of which are available here at the college.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade A-C, one of which will be art and design-related (fine art, 3D design, textiles, photography or graphic design) at grade A or B. Please note, this does not include design and technology (textiles or graphics).

The other four GCSEs at grade C or above must include English literature or language, or combined English, and may include design and technology subjects.

You will also need to have a portfolio of creative work to show to the course tutor at interview.

How do I apply?

To apply, simply complete the A Levels online application form.

You don’t need to apply for each subject area you are interested in. Once we have received your application form we will invite you into college for an interview or audition where we will be able to discuss every aspect of the course you have chosen, as well as any alternatives you may be considering. You will also have the opportunity to visit the areas of the college used for your programme choice.
