This 58 credit qualification will guide and assess the development of knowledge and skills relating to the health and social care workforce. This qualification confirms competence in these areas for roles such as:

Care assistants / support workers / key workers in residential settings

Healthcare assistants / support workers in community and primary care environments

Healthcare assistants / support workers in acute health environments

Care assistants / support workers / key workers in domiciliary services

Care assistants / support workers / key workers in day services

Support workers in supported living projects

Community-based care assistants / support workers / key workers, including those working in specialist areas eg dementia, learning disabilities

Personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or their families

Emerging new types of workers and multidisciplinary health roles crossing traditional service barriers and delivery models.

It is anticipated that you will progress to Level 5 qualifications for management or senior practitioner roles in health and social care, or to specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.

The course is flexible to suit all fields of health and social care. You can choose a pathway that suits your role - for example, working with people with a learning disability, people with dementia or children and young people.

It is also the main qualification required by the Quality Care Commission in England and the Care Councils in Wales and Northern Ireland. These are the recognised qualifications for care workers and senior care workers in health and social care.

How long is the course?

51 weeks

How will I be assessed?

You are required to produce a portfolio of evidence on our online e-portfolio, which will contain a variety of assessments covering the criteria stipulated by the awarding body.

Assessments may include:

Observations held in the working environment

Reflective accounts

Witness statements

Activity based work books

Work products

You will plan your assessments with your assessor prior to the assessment taking place.

What will I study?

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England (4222-31), you must achieve a minimum of 58 credits through the following:

Generic Pathway

28 credits from the mandatory units in Group A, a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional units in Group B, at least 23 credits from the optional units in Group C.
Dementia Pathway

28 credits from the mandatory units in Group A, a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional units in Group B, but must complete : DEM 301 Understand the process and experience of dementia and at least 23 credits from the optional units in Group C but one of the following must be completed: DEM 304, DEM,312, or DEM 313.

Adults with Learning Disabilities Pathway

28 credits from the mandatory units in Group A, a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional units in Group B but must complete : LD 201 Understand the context of supporting the individual with learning disabilities and at least 23 credits from the optional units in Group C but one of the following must be completed: LD 302, LD 303.

The course supports progression onto other courses including:
Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) and other care-related short courses.

Entry requirements

You are required to be in paid employment in the care setting, full-time or part-time, or to be carrying out voluntary work on a regular basis.

Age restrictions

This Level 3 Diploma is not approved for those who are under 16 years of age, and City & Guilds cannot accept any registrations for candidates in this age group.
