This qualification is a requirement for gaining the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status via the Institute for Learning (IFL).

Please note that the qualification gained at the end of this programme is for teachers in the lifelong learning sector; it is not a valid qualification to teach in the school sector (although you can teach post-14 in schools with a relevant subject area).

This programme is validated by the University of Derby.

How long is the course?

Two years. This is a part-time course requiring weekly attendance. Afternoon and evening sessions are available for year one.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, observations of teaching practice, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements. Where possible, assessment will relate to your own organisation and/or vocational setting.

What will I study?

Modules include:
  • Preparing to Teach Plus (FE and Skills sector)
  • Developing Practical Teaching Skills
  • The Theory of Teaching and Learning
  • Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice
  • The Teaching Professional
  • One of a range of optional modules including Teaching and Learning Informed Research, Teaching in Schools, Managing Behaviour and Technology Enhanced Learning

What can I go on to study?

The Certificate of Education teacher training qualification is worth 40 CATS credits at Level 4 and 80 credits at Level 5.

On completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for a foundation degree or full honours degree at the University of Derby, subject to entry requirements.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview at West Notts College in Mansfield to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

You must be professionally qualified in the area in which you wish to teach. For the certificate you need to possess a relevant Level 3 qualification.

You must also have a minimum Level 2 qualification in literacy on entry; you will not be able to access the course without this.

It is also recommended that you have a Level 2 qualification in numeracy on entry; however, if not, this must be achieved by the end of the first year of study (an additional fee will be payable if you need to attain this qualification).

As this is an ‘in-service’ course, applicants will need to be in a teaching situation for a minimum of 75 hours per year.
