The course is part-time, delivered over 18 weeks for 15.5 hour per week, and provides the underpinning knowlegdge necessary to progress to work within the rail industry.
The practical work will be hands-on to give you the opportunity to practice your acquired skills and knowledge. This course would suit someone who likes outdoor work in all weather conditions.

What will I study?

Throughout the course you will gain the following:

• Classroom and practical experience including training and developing competency in the use of hand tools and some power tools commonly used in the rail industry
• The City & Guilds Certificate in Rail Engineering Underpinning Knowledge – Level 2
• Core Health and Safety Training (Manual Handling, Fire and First Aid Awareness)

What does the course lead to?

Subject to successfully completing this course you willhave the opportunity to be interviewed to undertake further training be introduced to an employer.

Employment on the tracks is subject to passing a medical examination and an alcohol and drugs screening (a legal requirement to work on the railways). You will go on to complete the Personal Track Safety and Track Induction courses. These rail industry standard qualifications build on the city and guilds training course and are required for work on the railways. This is a pre-requisite that this learning aim is completed before progression is offered.
