Leading through Change Workshops with The Pacific Institute: Why Culture Matters Across Further Education
Aims
"Culture is absolutely critical to quality improvement within any organisation and Colleges are no exception. Professional teachers and support staff need to know that they are able to plan for themselves, take risks and learn from mistakes in a genuine learning organisation. We know that this is the case, and yet many organisations still operate in a more defensive style, where perfection is the constant goal and staff fight shy of taking the initiative.”

The modern day Further Education (FE) leader needs to be part of the solution to secure a sustainable future for FE. If the government’s aim of making sure that FE provides the skilled workforce employers need and helps individuals reach their full potential, then it is important to create an open culture. This requires determination and courage on the part of leaders and a significant degree of self-reflection. Leading through Change will give you the confidence to try new and creative approaches, deal with complex leadership situations and provide effective outcomes.
One of the main aims of any FE Institution is to develop and maintain an excellent learning environment for students by setting high standards across both its professional and teaching workforce. However, this can only be achieved and delivered more effectively and efficiently if the importance of developing a constructive culture in order to effect organisational change is in place.
Understanding your FE Institution, including its workforce and how it operates, is key if you are going to break down silos and barriers and learn how to work cooperatively and collaboratively both across FE and all the other organisations that you regularly engage with. Leading through Change will help you do just that, and will provide you with the necessary tools that you can take back to your Institution and implement to the benefit of your workforce, students and wider community. Delegates will be left with a foundation upon which they can build a positive culture framework that can be rolled out more extensively moving forward.
Leading through Change is designed to help those in attendance wrestle with perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of leading a 21st century organisation – namely, how do you ensure that your culture enables everyone to maximise their potential by spending more and more time operating to the very best of their abilities. Those who attend on this course will return to their workplace with the basic tools that will allow them to:
- Harness the leadership potential and talent you have across your institution
- Build shared responsibility
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviour across all levels of your organisation
- Develop and empower the leadership capacity of colleagues
- Seek to contribute to the leadership process
- Draw upon their values, strengths and abilities to deliver high standards of service
Objectives
Changing the culture of an organisation does not happen by chance, it needs to be nurtured. This one day course is aimed at all FE employees who want to develop the knowledge, skills and qualities to be an effective leader, and will enable you to:
- Transformoutcomes across your institution
- Understand your organisation and become an effective leader
