It is easy to assume that, as soon as students embark on Post 16 study, they automatically become well-motivated independent learners. More often, these young people have been spoon-fed, tracked and monitored, as schools have responded to the need to improve outcomes at KS4 at all costs. At the same time, teaching and learning at Post 16 is still often seen as a ‘secret garden’: there is often less focus on pedagogy than elsewhere and an assumption that anyone with a good degree will teach well at this level. There is consequently often less monitoring of the quality of teaching, learning and provision than in other phases of education. The course will take a three-fold approach: on the needs of individual students, the development of effective teaching and learning and the importance of consistent approaches across the whole institution and how all these should work together to encourage students to become genuine independent learners.

Objectives

Effective leadership and teaching at Post 16 is crucial to the life chances of young people as they seek to move on into an increasingly competitive higher education and employment environment. As a result of this, the Centre for Educational Excellence is delivering an intensive one day course designed to help schools and colleges deliver the best outcomes for their students. The course provides detailed guidance on every aspect of Post 16 provision and practical strategies for delivering it.

Attendance at this course will provide you with a knowledge and skills set that you will be able to take back with you to the benefit of your school and institution, including:

  • Effective transition from Key Stage 4
  • How to challenge and support teaching and learning at post 16
  • Strategies to help students become independent learners
  • Developing student voice and student leadership
  • Creating the right environment for learning
  • Leading the effective tutor team
  • Building successful enrichment and study skills programmes
  • Identifying and building the key skills and qualities of successful post 16 leaders
  • How to support students in making their next steps
