This module develops practitioners' interpretative skills in cross-sectional anatomy of the pregnant female pelvis and the developing fetus and their ability to recognise pathological abnormalities demonstrated in the above mentioned areas. Students will also develop competencies which enable them to evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic techniques; establish and adhere to examination protocols.

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteriaIn addition to the academic entry requirements, students will need to have appropriate clinical experience and access to the supervision and support of an experienced clinical practitioner who will act as their mentor for the duration of the course.
Modules HMSU7030 Obstetric Ultrasound (awarding 20 credits at level 7) Course summary
The aim of this module is to develop practitioners' interpretative skills in cross-sectional anatomy of the pregnant female pelvis and the developing fetus and their ability to recognise pathological abnormalities demonstrated in the above mentioned areas. Students will also develop competencies which enable them to evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic techniques; establish and adhere to examination protocols.
The indicative course content includes:
- Regional normal cross-sectional anatomy of the pregnant female pelvis and the developing foetus including variants
- Physiology and psychology of pregnancy
- Examination protocols, normal growth patterns and variants including graphical interpretation associated with the three trimesters of pregnancy
- Ultrasound appearances, assessment and measurements in normal and pathological conditions related to fetal head, spine, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, limb
- The diagnosis of complications of pregnancy
- Ultrasound of neonatal intracranial structures
- Interventional procedures
- Fetal heart monitoring and the role of Doppler ultrasound in cardiovascular examinations of the foetus, assessment of utero-placental dysfunction and uterine blood flow.
The assessment for this module includes:
- An unseen written examination (40% of the overall module mark)
- A case study project of 3000 words (60% of the overall module mark)
- Completion of summative clinical assessments of competence
