  • Develop interpretative skills in the ultrasound appearances of musculoskeletal structures
  • Recognise pathological abnormalities and normal variants in the above mentioned structures
  • Establish and adhere to examination protocols
  • Evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic imaging techniques
  • Study ultrasound procedures which are currently being developed to replace conventional diagnostic imaging examinations.

In addition to the academic entry requirements students will need to have appropriate clinical experience and access to the supervision and support of an experienced clinical practitioner who will act as their mentor for the duration of the course.


Modules

Module content includes:

  • Regional normal cross-sectional anatomy including normal and pathological variants
  • Biomechanics and mechanisms of injury
  • Dynamic ultrasound appearances in normal and pathological conditions related to joints, muscles and superficial soft tissues (including fluid collections and tendon damage) and spine
  • Upper and lower limbs
  • Static as well as real time imaging and quantitative examination of the infant hip
  • Role of ultrasound in musculoskeletal screening procedures.
Course summary

This module has been accredited by C.A.S.E. and is offered as a stand-alone module.

The aim of the module is to enable students to:

  • Develop interpretative skills in the ultrasound appearances of musculoskeletal structures
  • Recognise pathological abnormalities and normal variants in the above mentioned structures
  • Establish and adhere to examination protocols
  • Evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic imaging techniques
  • Study ultrasound procedures which are currently being developed to replace conventional diagnostic imaging examinations.

The assessment for this module includes:

  • An unseen written examination (40% of the overall module mark)
  • A case study project of 3000 words (60% of the overall module mark)
  • Completion of summative clinical assessments of competence.
