Travel Health (level 5)

Module delivery dates

This module is next running via distance learning, commencing 25 September 2013.

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

Closing date for applications

The closing date for applications is 5 working days prior to the module start date or, if this is your first module, 5 working days prior to the induction date.

This module aims to give you an introduction into travel medicine, risk assessment, strategies to prevent ill health in travellers and the management of travel health services.

This module has been planned in the light of the Royal College of Nursing (2011) Occupational Health Career and Competence Development Guidance and the Royal College of Nursing (2007) Competencies: An integrated career and competency framework for nurses working in travel medicine.

Selection criteria

To be eligible to study this module, you must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment. When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award. Participation in the formative components of the module is required in order to pass the module.

Intended learning outcomes

• Evaluate the resources and strategies available for the prevention of ill health in the outgoing traveller
• Establish a framework for a travel health service in a workplace environment or health care setting
• Evaluate and discuss the requirements for storing and prescribing prescription medicines and vaccinations for travellers
• Evaluate the resources and strategies available to assist the traveller returning from overseas with health problems

Course summary

This module will introduce you to aspects of the provision of an in-house service for the traveller. It will examine the resources and specialist community facilities available to address the health needs of those travelling, both leaving and returning to the UK. Legal and practical considerations will be given to aspects of working with prescription medicines and their specific storage requirements.
