Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Adult Care & Protection is intended for a range of professionals who, through their work, may encounter adults in need of support, care and protection.

This programme is strongly rooted in practice, and has been developed in collaboration with employers, practitioners, engagement with client groups and leading academics across the social science, medical, health and allied care professions.

On completion of the Postgraduate Certificate, participants can choose to continue with their studies to achieve the MSc Applied Professional Studies (Adult Care & Protection).

Programme Details

In a climate of unprecedented change and challenges in adult care and protection, we have introduced an innovative, inter-professional postgraduate course this is dedicated to integrating contemporary practice within theoretical frameworks that encourage critical thinking, analysis and reflexivity.

This programme casts adult care & protection into a critical framework and examines the interpretive and applied dimensions of legislation and policy in practice, its underpinning frameworks in human rights legislation, the tensions between protection, self-determination and autonomy as well as social and cultural issues.

There is also a focus on the role of professional ethics and values in this area of practice, inter-professional working and assessment and intervention.

Students will be given the opportunity to learn from leading international experts in legislation, policy and practice, and they will access academic researchers working within the broad auspices of adult care and protection.

Throughout the course, students will also consider the professional and personal demands of the complex nature of work upon the self.
