If this is your first module you will need to attend one of the induction days prior to your module start date. These are running in Lancaster on; 18 and 19 September 2013, 08 January 2014, 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on; 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014, 25 March 2014.

If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years, the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

Applicants will be required to complete a telephone interview with the programme leader.

The content will cover:
- Anatomy and physiology relating to the child
- Developmental milestones
- Recognition of the sick child
- Management of the sick child including pharmacological intervention and intra osseous infusion
- Physiology of normal labour
- Pathophysiology of abnormal labour
- Advanced neonatal and child life support
- Scope of practice
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Family support
- Involvement in decision-making
- Referral, multidisciplinary team working
On completion of this module you will be able to:
- Apply an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of the child and their normal developmental stages and landmarks
- Critically appraise the methods and underpinning theory regarding the assessment of the sick child and interpretation of this information to recognise the sick child
- Critically evaluate and apply the underlying principles and contemporary evidence based practice to the management of paediatric emergencies including resuscitation, trauma and medical emergencies
- Apply knowledge and critical understanding of the anatomy, physiology of normal pregnancy and labour to the assessment and management of obstetric and neonatal emergencies including advanced resuscitation skills
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt interpersonal communication methods for caring for these patient groups, their families and in partnership working with the multi-disciplinary team, critically reflecting on the limits of their own knowledge and scope of practice, and the need for referral.
