Here at the University of Cumbria we have been providing continuing professional development for paramedics since 2000. The course is delivered by subject specialism team members with extensive experience in distance learning.
What can this course lead to?Having completed the BSc(Hons) Developing Paramedic Practice, you could consider moving on to a Masters degree. The MSc Practice Development: Enhancing Paramedic Practice is an ideal progression.
We also have a good range of stand alone modules and awards, which could be supportive of your continuing professional development, on subjects such as:
- Leadership and organisational change
- Respiratory assessment and management
- Service improvement
- Teamwork Personal effectiveness
- Pharmacology and prescribing practice
- First contact and emergency care.
This qualification will enable you to pursue a career at more senior level. Graduates of this course have gone on to become Senior, Advanced and Remote Paramedics.
Students who exit the programme having completed 60 credits of study may be eligible for the award of a University Advanced Diploma Practice Development.

Selection criteria120 credits at level 5 or equivalent such as IHCD/EDXEL Paramedic training
To access this course you must be a qualified paramedic, registered with the Health Care and Professions Council or an equivalent and presently working in an emergency ambulance service or similar accident and emergency/first contact health care practice environment.
You will need to provide a statement from your current employer who must make reference to your professional competence.
Selection is via telephone interview with the course leader

The BSc(Hons) Practice Development: Developing Paramedic Practice has been designed in collaboration with the North West Ambulance Service to meet the needs of students working as Paramedics.
It is benchmarked against the Skills for Health Competency and Curriculum Framework for Emergency Care Practitioners (DoH 2007) and the competencies identified by the Royal College of Nursing for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (RCN, 2008).
The programme builds on academic achievement previously demonstrated at diploma level (level 5) and facilitates students’ ongoing professional development at level 6.
