Module delivery dates

Lancaster - each Tuesday from 26 November 2013 to 28 January 2014

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), 08 January 2014 and 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014 and 25 March 2014. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

Closing date for applications

The closing date for applications is 5 working days prior to the module start date or, if this is your first module, 5 working days prior to the induction date.

Why study with us?

This module is drawn from the postgraduate Occupational Therapy programme. The aim of the module is to explore and critically evaluate the relationship of physical activity to physical and psychological well-being. You will appraise theory and practice relevant to the role of the occupational therapist in facilitating participation in health improving and health promoting physical activities. You will contextualise this knowledge within current policy, legislation and health promoting initiatives.

RPHO7086 Physical Activity and Health - 20 credits at level 7

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to

  1. synthesise knowledge from relevant interprofessional theoretical perspectives in order to evaluate influences of physical activity on health
  2. explore influences on participation and analyse the relevance of these to promoting physically active behaviour change.
  3. critically analyse the evidence base and justify an occupational therapy role in facilitating engagement in physical activity for individuals and groups.
  4. develop and critically appraise physical activity interventions with supporting rationale.
  5. clinically reason and critique the integration of occupational therapy input within wider community-based initiatives, services and resources.
Course summary Practical workshops will be synthesised within analysis of biopsychosocial theoretical perspectives; influences of physical activity on health such as depression, anxiety, psychological well-being, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and their evidence base; types of physical activity including sport, exercise and lifestyle physical activity; barriers and supports to participation in physical activity; models of behaviour change, and their integration within occupational therapy theoretical approaches; exploration of practice contexts and environments for enabling participation; research into and planning of physical activity interventions; collaboration between statutory and/or voluntary agencies and user groups for facilitating participation.
