This module is aimed, in particular, at people who are working in childcare settings for pre-school children, or who may wish to develop their skills and knowledge for work in this sector.

It is aimed at helping you to manage the balance between your personal effectiveness in this role and the demands of providing a safe and stimulating environment for children.

One of the main components of the course will be an analysis of the work environment in which you define the local priorities for service development and your key personal development needs. This diagnosis will provide the context for the application of the managerial concepts explored in the module, with the more relevant concepts being explored in greater depth.

You will consider issues of organisational structure, culture and climate and organisational forms, such as networks, markets and systems. You will study aspects of role analysis, ideas of management and leadership, personal development, understanding self and diversity, communication skills, teamwork and dealing with conflict.

There will be a participative approach to classroom learning and activities. Core concepts will be introduced via lectures or directed readings and you will be encouraged to apply these concepts to your own organisational experience and issues via small group exercises or case studies. There will also be an emphasis on learning from your peers, by sharing experiences from your diverse organisations.

You will be assessed on the basis of an initial review of your organisational environment, the nature of your organisation, the demands this makes on you and your personal organisational skills. You will also submit a written analysis of a specific management issue identified in that review, in the context of developing your local service and yourself (this topic to be agreed in advance with tutor). In addition, you will give a formal presentation to the teaching group on how your learning has had an impact on yourself and/or your organisation during the course of the programme.
