Car Maintenance (Introduction)

Keeping a car on the road today can be an expensive business. But why pay for the repairs when you could do them yourself? With the UK Open Learning Car Maintenance course, you can learn all about what really goes on under the bonnet. From the fundamentals such as the basics of the engine, through to the more complex elements like the components of the gear box, you'll cover it all.

The course is ideal for anyone considering a job as a motor mechanic and does not have any experience. At the end of this course you'll be able to: • perform basic roadside first aid on your car • understand the various parts of your car and what these parts do • run a pre-MOT check on your car • identify potential issues with your car.

At UK Open Learning we pride ourselves on our friendly and supportive tutors. Your tutor support will start as soon as you receive your course and will be valid for 12 months. All our tutors are highly qualified with extensive experience in supporting distance learning students. You contact your tutor via email and they are responsible for marking assignments answering your questions and guiding you through the course to ensure you are ready for your examinations.

There are no entry requirements for this course, just a interest in the subject.

We recommended you spend approximately 110 hours of your time studying for the Car Maintenance Award. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 2 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 4 hours a week you could complete it in 6 months.

Unit 1 - Breakdown and Emergencies. Unit 2 - The Vehicle Body, Fixtures and Fittings. Unit 3 - The Engine and its Operation. Unit 4 - Suspension and Steering. Unit 5 - The Braking System.Unit 6 - The Electrical and Ignition System. Unit 7 - The Cooling System. Unit 8 - The Air-Conditioning and Heating System. Unit 9 – Transmission: Manual and Automatic. Unit 10 - Fuel Systems. Unit 11 - Emissions and Exhausts. Unit 12 - MOT Pre-Check.

Students are assessed through a series of tutor marked assignments based on their application of the course content. The assignments take the form of a series of structured questions. There is no word count for these assignments however you do have to prove to your tutor that you have fully understood the question asked, and one sentence answers will be rejected, and you will be asked to re-submit it again for marking.

This course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following UK Open Learning guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.
