This one year certificated programme of study is suitable for beginners or those who have previously studied health and social care at Level 1 equivalent and who wish to develop a career in caring, nursing or social care.

Students will then be introduced to more specialised units covering subjects such as the impact of diet on health and human development. A vocational unit will enable students to gain valuable work experience in health and care settings during the course. Students will also study other qualifications in subjects such as emergency aid.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

1 GCSE at grade C or above in English, maths or a science plus at least 2 GCSEs at grade D. Candidates must have at least a grade D in English. Alternatively, a level 2 certificate plus a 1 GCSE at grade C or above in English, maths or a science.

Students progressing internally from existing courses must be able to demonstrate a high level of success in all qualifications to date and a good reference reflecting strong attendance and behaviour. For some students an agreement will be reached to comply with an academic contract from the start of the course.

Mature applicants without formal qualifications but who have relevant vocational experience are welcome to apply. Further options will be discussed at interview.

An enhanced check undertaken by the Criminal Record Bureau is essential. Details available on request from student services.

Assessment:

Work is assessed by written assignments and presentations throughout the year.
Students must achieve satisfactory placement reports.

Progression from this course:

Opportunities are available for successful students to progress to Level 3 studies across the programme area, including the BTEC Extended Diploma. Your tutor will advise you on how to further develop your interests.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. Students will be required to obtain a current Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. This can be obtained through the college but the cost is the responsibility of the student.
