Methods of Teaching and Learning

The course is taught by well-qualified and experienced staff. Students will learn through a variety of methods including presentations, scenario based role play, project work and guest speakers. There is also a practical aspect to the course. There is typically a residential based outdoor-activity experience with one of the armed services as well as other off-site visits.

Methods of Assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework based. Each unit is assessed by 3-4 assignments contributing to a portfolio of evidence which will form a final overall grade of either a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* (Subsidiary Diploma); all of which have A-level equivalent tariffs.

Resources

Students will have full use of the library and the careers information centre, which includes text-books, journals, CD-ROMS and careers literature. There is also a well-equipped gym for fitness training.

Progression

The skills and knowledge acquired through studying this course provide a sound basis for students who wish to progress to a foundation degree in Public Services or directly into their application for Uniformed Public Service employment. However, it is not a prerequisite of any uniformed public service organisations’ entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE grades at C or above or the equivalent from four subject areas are needed including GCSE English. A GCSE in a humanities based subject is preferred. Students already studying the Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Public Services at St Brendan’s will be made a conditional offer subject to achieving at least an overall Merit. A period of short term voluntary community based work experience will be looked upon preferentially.

Associated Costs

Contribution to the cost of outdoor activities and trips (including residential) is expected to be approximately £150 – £250 per year for BTEC Diploma students, somewhat less for Subsidiary Diploma students.
