Who is the course for?
ESOL courses are for people whose first language is not English. The courses aim to improve your speaking, reading and writing of English so that you can apply these skills to your other subjects. .We run courses for all levels: From Entry 1 to Level 2 (Equivalent in points to GCSE grade B (Cambridge Advanced Level). Students should also aim to take GCSE English during their time at St Brendan’s.

Course Content
This course includes the elements of speaking, listening, reading and writing so that you can develop the basic literacy and English Language skills needed to function more fully at work, in everyday life and in the local community.
Methods of Teaching and Learning
The course is organised into different topic and skill areas so that all students’ individual needs are catered for effectively. Through role-plays, conversations and discussions you will improve your spoken English. You will also take part in a variety of activities such as watching videos, listening to CDs, individual work using Information Technology, pair work and group work. The topics covered in these courses include: personal details and experiences, work, education and training, housing, family and friends, transport, weather, the buying of goods, leisure, and UK society and culture.
Methods of Assessment
Assessment is by written examination and by a speaking and listening examination conducted by the teacher.
Qualifications available
Although entry to this course may be on any level, all ESOL students undertake an initial assessment to determine the appropriate level to begin the course. Certificates can be gained at the levels below.
