Community Sports Leadership

This level 2 award enables students to develop their organisational and leadership skills within a variety of sporting situations.

The course comprises eight units including a requirement of ten hours voluntary work within the community.

In addition students will need to undertake a nationally recognized First Aid certificate.

The seven units are:

• Planning and leading in sports sessions
• Developing leadership skills
• lead a session to improve fitness
• adapting sports activities
• Establish and maintain a safe sport session
• Organise and deliver a sports event or competition
• Pathways in sport and recreation

Methods of Assessment

Students are continually assessed through the course using a variety of methods. Students will be required to attend a series of open evenings and take part in the leadership of sports activities for prospective students.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

The course is tutored by well qualified members of staff. The majority of the course is practical and hence students need to be in the appropriate kit. There will also be some self-supported study. On occasions the students may possibly go to local schools to assist with classes.

Resources

Support for students is mainly provided in the Library and Information Centre, which provides access to the Internet and is extremely well stocked with the latest issues of coaching books, journals and CD-ROMs.

Progression

On successful completion of the course you will be able to assist a qualified coach. Furthermore, it provides the ideal stepping stone not only to employment but also to National Governing body coaching and officiating awards.

Entry Requirements

An interest and enthusiasm in sports coaching/leadership is essential and the student must be prepared to undertake ten hours of voluntary work. Ideally, participants will already hold a voluntary sports placement. All voluntary work must be completed outside of College hours. Students are advised that as part of the placement, students may be required to undertake a criminal records bureau check through the organisation for which they seek voluntary work. This is a legal requirement as part of safeguarding legislation when in the community. Furthermore, the course demands a commitment for the three terms. There is an 80% attendance requirement by Sports Leaders UK to complete the course
