This course has been developed to address the need for teachers and trainers to adopt a blended learning approach, which involves a combination of traditional classroom-based learning and remote distance learning formats.
The course focuses on the different experiences and expectations of learners when approaching the online learning experience, and how they may best be supported in moving into using differing online tools. The use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is central in this unit and it will be used heavily in order to promote the culture of blended learning and realise its full potential.

Course content
Participants will:
• Consider the resources and activities available and the value of these to effective teaching
• Analyse developments in educational technology and the new teaching models that have recently emerged
• Discuss how to facilitate the active engagement of students in online activities
• Evaluate their learners’ needs and decide on a simple activity in which to involve the learners in working actively online
• Plan and develop this activity paying attention to how to introduce, facilitate and support the activity
Assessment
Participants will be assessed through two pieces of written work:
• A review of the literature on blended learning
• A plan to introduce and support elements of an online activity with a group of students

The course is for professional training providers and education providers that use e-learning as part of their delivery. The course is also suitable forthe professional bodies etc.
Accreditation
This course leads to the achievement of Higher Education CAT (Credit Accumulation and Transfer) points and Southampton Solent University Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development.

Ten hours of workshop sessions will be interspersed with online learning activities. The programme can be tailored to organisational needs for a group of participants.

The unit has SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association) accreditation so by passing Developing the On-line Learning Experience unit will give the SEDA award for Supporting Learning with Technology.
