This course is ideal if you are already employed in a relevant area of work by one of the existing approved sponsoring companies. This ensures that you can complete the necessary work-based learning and assessments. Other suitable companies may be able to become approved sponsors.

Relevant areas of work typically include • signal engineering • electrical engineering • mechanical engineering • civil engineering • track engineering • telecommunications.

You are likely to be working in a technical or engineering role such as infrastructure maintenance or renewals, and hold a current valid PTS certificate or LUL equivalent. We expect you to spend at least ten per cent of your working hours on site.

The course is intended as a progression route for apprentices, although more experienced applicants may study the course for academic progress.

You follow a common programme of study to your student colleagues. This raises your knowledge of engineering and relevant rail industry topics. It is expected that the topics relating directly to your individual job function will be less of a challenge than the other topics on the course.

You need to input a significant amount of your own time as well as the University-based teaching in order to complete your coursework. Coursework includes • further reading and research • assignment work • laboratory reports • work-based learning modules.

Progression to our FdEng Railway Engineering course and ultimately our BEng Railway Engineering course is available if you obtain high marks and your sponsor’s permission.
