This course focuses on performance for stage and screen on both a practical and a theoretical level. This allows you to see the similarities and differences between stage and screen performance from a performer’s perspective.

During the course you
• examine and critically analyse dramatic and cinematic works
• develop practical performance skills on stage, screen and radio
• analyse performance spaces and attend productions to study the performances and audiences
• perform in non-theatrical venues as well as established performance spaces

As part of the course, you can go on a placement in the creative and cultural industries of South Yorkshire. This gives you professional work experience which can help with your career after graduating.

You explore theatre, film, television and radio from intellectual perspectives, including • aesthetic • economic • cultural • historical • social.

You take core modules across various media from the position of the critic, spectator and performer.

We deliver these modules through lectures, seminars, screenings and workshops. They are complemented by visits to regional performance spaces and productions.

Films are shown in our purpose-built film theatre, the Void. It combines new technology, including Blu-ray DVD through an HD digital projector, with older technology, including 40-year-old Westrex 7000 35mm projectors. These projectors can show both recent and rare, culturally valuable films in their original cinema format, including silent films at the correct speed.

We are one of the few universities in the country that has these capabilities. You can view films as they were originally meant to be seen, an experience that cannot be replicated through DVD alone. The Dolby 5.1 surround-sound system enhances your viewing experience.

We continue to enjoy a close working relationship with the British Film Institute (BFI). We have privileged access to the BFI national archive, which contains more than 50,000 fiction films and over 100,000 non-fiction titles, most of which are not available on VHS or DVD.

The Void also hosts extracurricular activities such as the Student Union Film Society and was used as part of the international film festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest in November 2009.

You have access to our learning centre which has
• thousands of films on DVD, Blu-ray and videotape
• a large collection of books and journals
• individual viewing facilities for private study with access to the British Film Institute's SIFT database

You choose optional modules allowing you to tailor the course towards your interests and career ambitions.
