English Literature – BA (Honours)

On this course you study canonical and less-traditional works from the Renaissance to the present, and a range of new literatures such as US, Canadian and post-colonial works.

You develop valuable skills in • writing extended prose • presenting immaculate copy to tight deadlines • communicating ideas in a clear and persuasive manner. These attributes are needed in a professional environment and increase your employability.

The course includes theoretical and philosophical approaches to literature, so you can develop your analytical skills to their full potential.

You can choose from a diverse selection of modules on topics such as • Renaissance tragedy • children's literature • race, slavery and empire • post-colonial Britain • writers, readers, spectators. An unusual feature of this course is a module which focuses on the short story.

The opportunity is available for you to study abroad at an American, Canadian or European university. Experience overseas is often looked upon favourably by employers. You can also complete a work-based project to develop your professional skills and further enhance employability.

We support your development by helping you to pursue independent study projects. These take various forms such as work-based projects, single author projects, specialist theory projects and a dissertation.

This course runs alongside long established degrees in English language and creative writing within a popular and expanding English programme. You benefit from being part of a large English department of over 30 staff, who offer you many specialist options. There is also a full-time version of this course.
