The College has excellent facilities: a range of professional video cameras and audio recording equipment, lighting kits, gels and reflectors, dolly track, camcorder stabilisers and a jib, a television studio with a green screen, and a dedicated Mac editing suite with Final Cut Pro X editing software. You will gain knowledge of and skills in screenwriting,
pre-production, pitching and presenting, directing, interviewing,
camerawork, lighting, sound recording, animating, and audio and
visual editing. Each of your specialist media production projects
will also develop your abilities to research, budget, communicate
work in teams, project manage, and think as an entrepreneur. These
transferable skills are relevant to all areas of creative arts and
will prepare you for both higher education and the world of
work.
The course is taught through a range of approaches designed to
provide students with the opportunity to develop technical skills
for practical applications and provide vocational real world
experience. Delivery methods will include practical workshop
sessions in our TV studio, media editing suites and on location in
the Reading area, classroom-based theory sessions supported by IT
and computer-based research, real-world media industry situations
(live broadcasts, video editing sessions, production company
meetings etc) and educational visits to industry trade fairs and
other media industry-related events.
During the first year of the programme students will work towards a Media, Film and TV Production BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 A level). Successful students will be able to progress onto the second year of the programme where they will work towards either a Media, Film and TV Production BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels) or Media, Film and TV Production BTEC Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels). Throughout the duration of the programme students will develop a portfolio of work, media industry knowledge and skills to help them to publish their work independently and find employment, or support an application for a higher education course. Additional learning and pastoral support is offered through the tutorial support.
A minimum of four GCSEs grade A*- C including English language and preferably maths, a higher diploma at grade C or above with Level 2 functional skills, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma with a Merit profile with Level 2 functional skills. All applicants will be interviewed and should bring along a portfolio of media-related work. A satisfactory reference or school report is required.
You could progress to a degree foundation degree or higher national diploma in a media-related subject or gain entry into the industry at junior level. At the end of the course you will have knowledge and skills to enable you to build a career in hundreds of different jobs in the film, television and media industries: producer, screenwriter, director, cinematographer, camera operator, sound mixer, editor - to name only a few of the better known roles.
