The Film and Television Studies BA provides an interdisciplinary approach to these two significant media. The course offers a detailed understanding of the theory, history and cultural importance of film and television.
Learning is through a range of critical perspectives and research skills, while there is also experience given of film production and working with professionals from the industry. The course is unique in enabling students to benefit from both theory and some elements of practice. There is a strong emphasis on developing ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills through a variety of courses taught by staff.
The student experience is central to our teaching philosophy and is reflected in the most recent NSS results in which students have praised highly their learning experience. These results also make evident staff accessibility and support which is crucial for deepening understanding of the subject area and developing textual and contextual skills of analysis.
There is a visiting speaker programme with past speakers including: Brian Clemens (producer/writer: The Avengers, The Professionals), David Morrissey (actor: Walking Dead, State of Play), Philip Glennister (actor: Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes), Hilary Bevan Jones (ex chair: BAFTA), and Robert Watts (producer: Return of the Jedi, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). The course offers events and screenings and now has excellent new resources (with a newly refurbished media centre).
We offer a stimulating learning environment for those who want a thorough grounding in approaches to cinema and television. Equally, we emphasise the changing nature of the industries and that is reflected in continually up-to-date modules and through the use of cutting edge critical approaches.
