Manual handling is one of the largest causes of work related injuries and lost work hours in the work place. There is a requirement for handling and moving of people training to fulfil the Management of Health and Safety Regulations (1999) and Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992). It is recommended that suitable professional training is carried out on an annual or bi-annual timescale to eliminate skill fade and encompass new employees.

  • Identify how age, fatigue and general health can affect the individual’s chances of a manual handling related accident at work
  • Understand how poor lifting techniques affect the lower back
  • Identify correct ergonomic principles at work
  • Identify how to avoid risks
  • Practice basic movements and techniques used to lift and test load
  • Assess lifting, who or what machinery should be used to carry out the lift
  • Identify how age, fatigue and general health can affect people’s ability to mobilise independently
  • Understand the importance of correct technique
  • Understand their responsibilities under the Health and Safety regulations.

Those working with people in the care sector who are required to train people on Manual Handling and Moving.

Training method:

  • Course will be delivered in a classroom environment, all equipment required will be provided.
  • Delegates will be assessed on one of the techniques learnt in a training role.

Course outcome/qualification:

Delegates will receive a certificate of competence as a trainer.
