The Programme
The Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning in schools offers an engaging programme for those who are clear about the vocational area they want to learn about. This qualification has been designed to assess the knowledge and competence required to work in this sector. This qualification incorporates the units in the Award and adds competency based units to reflect the role of those supporting pupils' learning. The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a combined knowledge and practice qualification for those support staff roles that directly support teaching and learning for example teaching assistants or learning support assistants. The certificate is made up of four mandatory units plus five additional optional units combining both knowledge and competency.
The Programme Content
Entry Requirements
Learners need to have the ability to work at GCSE grade C level. Government requirements for Teaching Assistants state that a Level 2 qualification in English/Literacy and Maths/Numeracy must be held, so learners must hold or be willing to work towards these. Learners for this course should be 18 or over.
Costs
Learners on this course will be expected to provide a USB memory stick on which to save and back up their work; and to meet printing and travel costs within the course requirements. There is no uniform cost on this course, though learners are expected to provide smart/casual attire for placement (ie polo shirt and black trousers, not jeans). You will have to pay for an enhanced CRB check, please see CRB Checks information below.

Progression
Upon completion of this programme, candidates are able to take up paid employment within the sector or progress on to our Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course in order to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HTLA) status.
Length of Study
This course runs over one year. Lessons run over two days per week in college, with three days a week in a placement setting.
Academic Year
This course starts in the 2013 / 2014 academic year.
DBS Checks
As this course requires you to undertake work placements with children and/or vulnerable adults, a DBS check (formerly CRB check) is required. This will be carried out by Petroc prior to you starting the course in September and costs £53. Please click on the following link for
