The Programme

Biology is a topical and important subject relevant to everyone - cloning, genetically modified organisms, the genome project, the influence of mankind on the environment, the potential risks of some foods and many other topics appearing in the media regularly. This course will allow you to develop an understanding of the sciences underpinning the advances in the new technologies and enable you to contribute to informed discussion in this important area. You will need to spend time gaining work experience and forging links with local employers.

The Programme Content

The course includes 12 modules offering you a wide range of subjects and providing a variety of experience, plus a more general 'developing graduate skills' module that includes work based learning. In Level 5 there is a six day biochemistry residential module at Plymouth University. Students particularly enjoy this module as it provides an opportunity to use the university laboratories, meet lecturers and view the campus and facilities. Other topics include human physiology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology and cell biology and sustainable development, which is delivered in partnership with the UNESCO Biosphere in Braunton.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will need 80 UCAS points for entry, usually from A Levels, NVQs or Access to Higher Education, preferably in a related subject. Mature applicants will also be considered based on their relevant experience and knowledge. Chemistry is an important subject that underpins several modules so it is advisable to have a good GCSE Level pass in this subject and preferably AS Level, although candidates can undertake to 'fill in the gaps' themselves by studying before they start the course. Advice in this will be given at interview.

Costs

As mentioned earlier, there are residential visits in the second year and accommodation normally costs approximately £200 for the week.

Venue

Barnstaple Campus

Dates

Tuesday and Wednesday, or Wednesday and Thursday (TBC)

Progression

Upon successful completion of the programme students may be able to progress to the final year of the BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences at Plymouth University. Please note there is a progression application deadline and places may be subject to availability. Foundation degree graduates may also go on to trainee posts in areas such as health counselling, biomedical and public health laboratories, pharmaceutical sales and marketing, health and product development or food quality control.
