The Programme

If you loved Geography or Biology at GCSE, then this is the course for you! Environmental Studies is a stimulating course that will develop your skills in the analysis and solution of complex real world problems. You will study the interaction of humans and the environment. You will engage with how the study of science contributes to our understanding of the wider world. At AS Level there are two modules. Module one looks at how the other living things on the planet are threatened by human activities and how they can be protected. Module two looks at the issues around global warming, water resources and supplying the world with building materials and metals.

The A2 Level course (year two) has two modules. Module one looks at how farming, fishing and forestry supply our growing needs and cause us problems. Module two studies the global effects of energy supply and the origin, movement and effects of pollutants and waste. The whole course is over viewed with respect to sustainability: how can a finite world supply a growing population?

Will GM food kill us or feed the world?
Why is farmed fish pumped full of poisons?
Why is the tiger threatened with extinction?

Every time you open the newspaper or put on the television you are told that some new environmental crisis is upon us. It is designed to help you make an informed judgement about these issues. The subject is delivered in two modules. A benefit of this modular system is that there are modular examinations in January, so you do not need to remember everything for one terminal examination.

Unit 1:
Does it matter that 1/4 of all species are endangered?
Do we need so many flies?
