Cambridge B1 Blended Course – A comprehensive course for Adults (16+)
What is it?
The Cambridge B1 Course is a 100-hour Blended Learning General
English Course for adults who are working towards a CEFR B1 level
of English. Blended learning is a mix of online and classroom
teaching. Developed by Cambridge ESOL and Cambridge University
Press, the Cambridge B1 Course consists of 24 modules, covering
topics such as travel, family, sport, careers, money and creative
thinking. Each module has four separate units covering
Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills, as well as grammar
and vocabulary. The course develops real-life communication skills
by focusing language and topics on relevant, common and practical
situations.
How does it work?
Students access 75 hours of online self-study activities on their
computer and are supported by 25 hours of face-to-face lessons with
a teacher. Students can learn at their own pace by logging in from
any multimedia PC, at home or at university, and information can be
brought to life in video and audio as well as picture and text
formats. The online components are accessed through
a Learning Management System (LMS) that
can be accessed from anywhere in the world, meaning students can
start their course before they arrive in the UK. As learners
use it to study, it tracks their progress, allowing teachers to
identify individual learner problems.
Why do Blended Learning?
With fewer hours needed to complete a course, Blended Learning
offers more flexibility with more focus on personalised teaching.
Students can review their progress, receive instant feedback, get
online support and take progress tests throughout the course.
Emphasis on the self-study element means classroom time can focus
on the needs of individual students. Teachers can easily keep
track of their students’ use of the online system and review test
results.
What is B1?
B1 is an extremely important level because it bridges the gap
between simple and complex language usage. The Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines it as when a
learner:
• Can understand the main points of clear
standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work,
school, leisure, etc.
• Can deal with most situations likely to
arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is
spoken.
• Can produce simple connected text on topics
which are familiar or of personal interest.
• Can describe experiences and events,
dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and
explanations for opinions and plans.
CEFR Section 3.3
Who is it for?
The course is suitable for all learners over the age of 16,
including adults at education institutions such as universities,
colleges, private schools and adult learning centres.
