Nottingham Trent University has an international reputation for textile design, making and research, and we are famous for our innovative, creative teaching that helps practitioners learn weave techniques effectively. This unique course will enable you to construct woven textiles according to your interests, whether this lies in fashion, accessories, interiors or craft.

You will learn the whole process of weaving, starting with yarn and colour selection and ending with finished samples. You will be working on table looms and will get to grips with the warp winding machine. The warp (the vertical yarns) will be made using a range of materials such as cotton, silk and wool. You will learn how to make a warp and dress a loom along with threading-up processes and lifting plans. You will then be ready to insert the horizontal yarns using a wider range of materials in order to create unique fabric swatches. You will be encouraged to use a range of materials and to be experimental as you learn a basic range of woven techniques such as plain, twill, mat, seersucker, satin and sateen and honeycomb. You will learn these processes through clear, step-by-step guides supported by detailed hand-outs that will be of use beyond the course.

Upon completion of the course you will have:

  • completed colour pallets and yarn windings
  • fabric swatches that demonstrate basic woven structures
  • experimental swatches for interior, fashion or accessories.

You do not need any prior skills to attend this course. It is ideal for anyone who is interested in constructing textiles whether for professional or personal reasons. It is suitable for:

  • anyone in the fashion and textile industry at any level, whether designers, buyers or merchandisers, wishing to know how to make woven textiles
  • those who are applying for future undergraduate or postgraduate studies in textiles, fashion or accessories
  • teachers and technicians wishing to explore creative textile processes.
