- You will work closely with the School's Mathematics related
research groups:
- Applied Mathematics
- Statistical modelling.
- You will benefit from the School's strong links with local industry. This will ensure you up-to-date/relevant course material and the opportunity of job placements with companies such as IBM and Misys.
- Our students have recently formed a Mathematics Society. This will enable you to take part in regular events hosted on campus by the local branch of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
- Students will have access to outstanding facilities, including
our:
- British Olympic Association approved Environmental Chamber
- Biomechanics Laboratory, which includes a Performance Analysis Suite.
89% of our students would recommend studying Maths at NTU (National Student Survey 2011).
What our students say"My greatest achievement as an NTU student is being able to do so much whilst at university, from both an academic and non-academic point of view. For me this involved passing each year, gaining an industrial placement and being awarded a sport scholarship.
"I like the fact that everything I need is accessible and on campus. The environment is friendly and the staff are helpful. I have always been well supported throughout my time at NTU."
Stephanie Smith, BSc (Hons) Sports Science and Mathematics

How will I study?Contact time in lectures and seminars is around 14 to 16 hours per week, which includes two to four surgery sessions. This equates to about a third of the time for scheduled learning (including workshops and practical classes). the rest of your scheduled learning is given to self-guided independent study (reading text books, lecture notes and working on exercises).
Lectures will take place in various buildings across Clifton campus.
How will I be assessed?Assessment is by a variety of methods including the following.
Written
- Exams
- In class tests
Coursework
- Assignments
- Group projects
- Presentations
All mathematics modules have two or three assessment components. In Year Three approximately 66% these assessments will be carried out as written exams with the remainder assessed on coursework. The first two years will have a heavier weight on written exams with approximately 77% of assessment components exam/test based.
Who will teach me?Dr James Hind, Lecturer
"I recently won
several HESTEM grants to work with the Nottingham Girl's High
School on final year Maths education projects and to build
employability skills into our Maths course. Local, national and
global companies have helped us to make sure that our students
leave with the skills, abilities and confidence to excel in the
jobs market.
"As a team our research focus includes biological mathematics, statistics and computational modelling but we also encompass financial analysis, cryptography and many other fields"
Dr Reuben O'Dea, Lecturer
"I am currently pursuing research in mathematical modelling of
biological tissue growth. Specific research interests include:
- the influence of mechanical stimuli on tissue growth in bioreactors
- multiscale aspects of tissue growth
- fluid dynamics.
Techniques employed include asymptotic and numerical methods."
