Description

Most developments require some degree of ground profile modification, and where space is at a premium in particular ground will be retained rather than sloped. Those commissioning or managing a project should have an appreciation of the design issues and what is reasonable, and so the aim of this course is to develop your ability to understand the principles behind retaining structures.

The course will start from a review of how walls fail and progress to examine the soil mechanics principles behind earth and water pressures. Movements behind and around walls will be discussed, before the analysis and design of both gravity and embedded walls is covered. The design codes will be discussed…

The design codes will be discussed, best practice guidance cited and practical design guidance provided. The importance of controlling water will also be stressed. The course will be taught via a series of lectures followed by tutorial questions with case studies to illustrate the material. You will be encouraged to undertake some additional guided study after the course to further reinforce your learning. The indicative content comprises the following:

  • Types of wall
  • Common failure modes
  • Brief reprise of the principles of soil strength and earth pressures
  • Estimation of earth pressures
  • The influence of movement on earth pressures
  • Movements around excavations
  • Design codes and factors of safety
  • Mechanics and fundamental design of gravity walls
  • Mechanics and fundamental design of embedded walls
  • Buildability and the importance of drainage.

The intended audiences for this course are architects and developers wanting to develop their appreciation of retaining walls, graduate civil and structural engineers wanting to develop their understanding and skills, engineering geologists with some design experience wanting to develop or refresh their understanding, and geotechnical engineers early in their careers wanting to develop their knowledge.

At the end of this course you should have:

  • refreshed your understanding of the types of wall and their common failure modes
  • refreshed your knowledge and understanding of basic soil mechanics principles applicable to earth pressures
  • reviewed the forms and magnitude of ground movements around retained excavations
  • developed your knowledge and understanding of the design principles and codes for gravity and embedded walls.
