Course focus
This course is designed for those who want to be at the centre of the management of construction procurement processes.

The course will develop your knowledge and skills to successfully undertake the role of quantity surveyors and commercial managers in a construction team to secure the right quality scheme, on time and at the right price.

Accreditation
The course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Course content
For students working in a related role within the construction industry*

Year One

  • Architectural Science and Building Engineering Services (20 credit)
  • Fundamentals of Construction and Practice (40 credit)
  • Introduction to Measurement and Cost (20 credit)
  • Law and Health and Safety (20 credit)
  • Practice in the Workplace (20 credit)

Year Two

  • Measurement (20 credit)
  • Construction Technology (20 credit)
  • Law and Contemporary Economics (20 credit)

Year Three

  • Contract Administration: Control and Finance (20 credit)
  • Project Development and Cost (20 credit)
  • Sustainable Technology with Environmental Control (20 credit)

Year Four

  • Professional Practice and Management (40 credit)
  • Industrial Practice Quantitiy Surveyors (20 credit)

Year Five

  • International Project Appraisal (20 credit)
  • Dissertation (40 credit)

*If students are not working in a related role in the construction industry the modules in Year one will be spread over two years, completing the course in six years.

The modules in Year One are shared with BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and BSc (Hons) Construction Management. This enables you to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and gives the flexibility to switch to either of the other courses at the start of your second year (subject to your original entry qualifications).

How do you study?
The part-time study route is taught one day a week and, where possible, part-time students are taught alongside full-time students.

This course is modular and teaching is delivered through:

  • lectures
  • tutorials
  • workshops
  • seminar groups
  • site visits
  • laboratory sessions
  • individual and group project.

The delivery of the course is enhanced by:

  • the incorporation of guest lectures delivered by external practitioner experts
  • extensive use of case studies and projects (some set by real companies)
  • field trips.

Assessment
Assessment is by a combination of examinations, coursework and a dissertation.
