This course will develop your awareness of product design and technology in the UK, from idea to manufacture. You will develop your technical and interpersonal skills and consider new ways of thinking about the design process. A 3D design innovation project will be set which you complete in teams and present to your fellow students and tutors. This team project has a simple theme: to develop an innovative new product that can be easily adopted by an end user and which will become an integral part of everyday life today, tomorrow and into the next century.

The course covers a diversity of skills and knowledge, including:

  • Advanced design and manufacturing technologies – expand your knowledge of the latest cutting-edge technologies and see how they can be applied to interdisciplinary design. You will learn about water jet cutting, CNC machining, laser cutting and model building.
  • Computer Aided Design – explore the creative and artistic uses of CAD systems, and how they can be applied to engineering and design activities which support the relationship between science and the arts. You will be introduced to Solidworks 3D CAD software and you will develop an awareness of its capabilities.
  • Rapid prototyping – how this technology is being used to realise design concepts. You will see how rapid prototyping technology can be used to build 3D prototypes from a CAD model. You will investigate the capability of the process and, if practical, have the opportunity to build your own rapid prototyping product.

This course is delivered by the academic staff from the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment, supported by guest lecturers and specialist technicians.

It is a valuable opportunity if you plan on becoming a successful professional in the field of engineering or product design and are looking for a worthwhile study experience. It is ideal if you are interested in working on interdisciplinary projects to strengthen your portfolio and are keen to develop new approaches to your work. The ideal attendee will be ideas and solution-driven, open to new ways of working and able to work with others in a positive and inclusive way.
